It's been a while since I've done a written post on here, hasn't it? And it's not just because DC hasn't been publishing any new Justice Society content apart from the Stargirl: Spring Break Special and the recently concluded Infinite Frontier miniseries. I've also been doing most of my nerd writing at CBR since early this year with now over 100 articles published on the site, covering everything from comics, manga, anime and television.

Of course, I wouldn't be a features writer at CBR today without my Huntress blog, which is now officially 10 years old. Around this time a decade ago, I created this blog to share my love of the original Helena Wayne Huntress –– the character that made me a long-term DC fan.

It's kind of insane to think 10 years have already passed and that this site has grown so much since then. It only made sense to revisit this website with a brand new post on the 10th anniversary of Huntress: Crossbow at the Crossroads, the miniseries that marked Helena Wayne's New 52 debut!

Looking back on it now, I'd say the New 52 remains a highly controversial reboot to this day. To DC's credit, however, it's understandable why they did the reboot. Sales were low and they needed to revitalise their IPs in a way that attracted new readers. The problem was they did so at the expense of alienating their long-term fans. As such, the New 52 was a short term success at best.

Caught in the crossfire of the New 52's controversial continuity changes was Helena Wayne, the original Huntress that ended up retconning –– at least initially –– her post-Crisis successor, Helena Bertinelli. While a newer version of Helena Bertinelli was eventually introduced three years later in the Grayson series, no in-story explanation was ever offered for why Helena Wayne decided to take up the other Huntress's identity.

For Helena Wayne's New 52 anniversary, I'm going to offer my own take on why Helena Wayne took up the identity of Helena Bertinelli while she was living on Earth-0!

Helena Wayne Was A Shellshocked Teenager

The first obvious reason that comes to mind for why Helena Wayne took up Helena Bertinelli's identity in the New 52 is that she arrived on Earth-0 as a shellshocked 16-year-old girl. As established in both Worlds' Finest #0 and Earth-2 #1 –– both published in 2012 –– Helena was raised from a very young age to be a crimefighter by both of her parents, who never gave up their lifestyles as Batman and Catwoman.

One of the first traumatic experiences Helena had fighting alongside her parents as Robin was the loss of her mother, Selina Kyle. Prior to working as her father's partner, Helena worked primarily alongside her mother solving cases involving abused women and human trafficking –– two very serious issues that are very important to her mother.

During one such investigation, Selina came across an Apokoliptian threat that resulted in her death. Filled with hatred, sorrow, and rage, and very young Helena (maybe around 14 or 15) impulsively attacked the Apokoliptian threat that killed her mother. She nearly got killed herself and only cheated death with the timely arrival of Kara Zor-L, who at the time operated as Supergirl. This was Helena's first encounter with Kara and, from there, the two struck a friendship with each other.

It wasn't long after her mother's death that Apokolips invaded Earth-2 at full force. During the year Helena started working alongside her father as Batman, Helena had developed a noticeably violent fighting style. While resolving a case her mother was working on prior to her death, Helena very mercilessly injured criminals to the point of leaving them in critical condition. This was a major concern for her father, Bruce Wayne.

In the months leading up to the major battle that resulted in his own death, Bruce managed to keep Helena's violent behaviour slightly under control by giving her menial tasks as a sidekick while he handled the more dangerous aspects of a criminal case. After Bruce lost his life to stop Apokolips from completing their invasion of Earth-2, both Helena and Kara fell through an Apokoliptian portal, which brought them to Earth-0.

In having lost both of her parents to Apokolips and getting stranded on a new Earth where Bruce and Selina were still alive but weren't her parents, this took a nasty toll on Helena's still-developing brain. She was no longer just dealing with the trauma of having lost both of her parents under violent circumstances. She was also dealing with the trauma of having lost her original world as well and being forced to reinvent herself on an Earth where she doesn't exist. This last detail most likely facilitated her decision to become Helena Bertinelli on Earth-0.

Helena Wayne Identified With Helena Bertinelli

In the first year Helena laid low, she researched her new world and its inhabitants. She knew right away she had to create a new identity in order to survive on this new Earth, but she couldn't just be anyone. She had to come up with an identity that matched her life experiences but also didn't require her to completely falsify her existence.

Helena got the inspiration for her new identity when she saw a man pinned to a wall with crossbow bolts. By age 17, Helena Wayne had developed a new codename as the Huntress and developed a new costume to match her new identity. Although her first Huntress costume had a similar design to the post-Crisis Helena Bertinelli costume, she did not get the costume design idea from Bertinelli but from her mother.

Having used her mother's Catwoman suit as the base template for her own Huntress suit, the only changes Helena made was customise the gloves, boots, mask, and utility belt to be purple. She also gave white accents to her cape and suit, which also resulted in the white cross that was prominently featured on her torso.

Since Catwoman was the main inspiration for Helena's new Huntress identity in the New 52, this also informed what type of crime-fighting she would do on Earth-0: take up cases involving abused women and human trafficking. With her new mission statement realised, she added her iconic crossbow to her tools of trade, and all that was left was for her to develop a civilian identity.

While it was established in Worlds' Finest #1 that Helena used various aliases in the five years that she operated on Earth-0, the Huntress: Crossbow at the Crossroads miniseries established she used the Helena Bertinelli identity the longest. Though Helena never explained why she used this particular identity for a lengthy period of time, the reason can also be pieced together based on what we know of the New 52 version of Helena Bertinelli.

In Grayson Annual #1, it was established that the real Helena Bertinelli had faked her own death to escape a life of organised crime and join Spyral. At some point during her research phase, a teenaged Helena Wayne became aware of Helena Bertinelli's "death" and used that as her new origin story.

In this particular case, Helena Wayne most likely fabricated the narrative of the mafia princess who "died" in the public eye but actually survived the brutal massacre of her family. Using her own "death" as a means to a new beginning, Helena Wayne as "Helena Bertinelli" reinvented herself as the Huntress and committed herself to destroying organised crime –– a modus operandi that fit her own mission of dismantling human trafficking rings around the world.

The other reason Helena Wayne most likely chose "Helena Bertinelli" as her new identity? She personally identified with Bertinelli's own tragedy. As a teenaged girl who experienced the violent deaths of both of her parents on Earth-2, she could identify with Bertinelli's own trauma of losing her family in a violent manner. She could also identify with Bertinelli's need to reinvent herself in a way that caused her to "forget" who she really was and where she really came from.

Become a Patron!
Diane Darcyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10088910242990719027noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-368648927403203265.post-49253594963952311422021-09-07T08:00:00.009-07:002021-09-07T08:23:15.284-07:00Huntress Podcast E58: Wonder Woman #272 [Audio]
The Huntrio, Diane, Laurel and Ashford talk Solomon Grundy, loving art, The Huntress as a solo hero and so much more! All the damage from all the Crises was undone, and heroes long thought gone returned from whatever exile they had been in. Most of them, at least. Alan Scott, the Green Lantern from the Justice Society of America, has noticed some of his allies are still missing in action, and he’s determined to find them. There are others, though, who would rather remain hidden than explain themselves, like Roy Harper, a.k.a. Arsenal, a man who should be dead but now is not. While details of the new DC timeline are still being fleshed out in the Infinite Frontier miniseries along with the Future State comics, today's Stargirl: Spring Break Special gives us a more definitive status quo on DC's Golden Age heroes, including legacy heroes.

If you haven't read Stargirl: Spring Break Special yet, turn away now, as there are major spoilers ahead!

Written by Geoff Johns with artwork from Todd Nauck and Bryan Hitch, one of the things the Stargirl special establishes for readers is what is currently canon in the Infinite Frontier timeline. One of the first things Johns and Nauck confirms is the identities of the Green Arrow and Speedy we saw teased as members of the Seven Soldiers of Victory in the 1940s. They do confirm they are the same Oliver Queen and Roy Harper who are currently active in the present timeline, but with a major retcon: they were now time displaced in the 1940s for a time as opposed to having debuted in the 1940s. They only made it back to the present after Nebula Man displaced the Seven Soldiers, just like in previous continuities.

Other characters and timelines that get confirmed include the original legacy heroes who were members of the Justice Society during the 1970s and 1980s. This marks the first official appearance of the original Helena Wayne Huntress as a Prime Earth character, with the implication that she is time displaced. Exactly where and when she is is teased as an upcoming Justice Society storyline, which will also potentially streamline DC's entire Golden Age history and legacy.

In terms of story, the Stargirl special serves as an easy entry point for both new and old readers. Johns and Nauck reintroduce Courtney Whitmore as Stargirl, Pat Dugan as her step-father and sidekick S.T.R.I.P.E., and the Seven Soldiers of Victory in a way that's easy for everyone to follow. Johns and Nauck provide just enough information about each character to get readers up to speed, but avoid excessive exposition. The majority of the writing is focused on developing the actual story, which also sets up two upcoming series: Stargirl and Justice Society.

On the front of characterisation, Courtney's depiction is consistent with her past portrayals in the comics as well as the Stargirl TV show. Courtney is once again an outgoing teenage girl from California living in Nebraska, who also struggles to balance her school life with her superhero lifestyle. More insight into Courtney's complicated life are provided in a snippet written by actress Brec Bassinger, who portrays the character on the TV show. Pat Dugan's characterisation is also fairly consistent with his past portrayals in the comics and television show.

The one characterisation I felt was hit and miss was that of Emiko Queen. On the one hand, she is depicted as highly intelligent, self-motivated, and has excellent chemistry with Courtney. What I'm not sold on, however, is the idea of her being a less skilled archer than Oliver. To establish that Oliver is somehow the better archer after a few years of being stuck on an island than a half-Japanese girl who was raised to use a bow from a young age just doesn't feel right. Especially considering she was raised by Shado, who would absolutely make sure she doesn't miss her targets. (There's something more to be said about Japan's high standards for performance, but I'll save that conversation for a different post.)

As for how the story fits into the overall DC continuity, this is also a bit hit and miss for me, though admittedly more hit than miss. I do appreciate the attempt to integrate all of the characters associated with DC's Golden Age on Prime Earth, including characters that were originally unique to DC's Earth-2 continuity like Helena Wayne. I also think using Per Degaton and time travel as the reason some characters went missing and why certain aspects of history changed is pretty ingenius.

My only complaint on this front is Johns adding unnecessary retcons that could potentially further convolute the DC timeline. I especially had this issue with retconning Green Arrow and Speedy as getting pulled back in time to temporarily live in the 1940s as opposed to having them originally appear in that timeframe. It's especially unnecessary in a story that acknowledges the original time displacement of the Seven Soldiers of Victory by Nebula Man, causing them to reappear in the present in the first place.

Nothing about the Stargirl story would've changed if Johns had decided to have Ollie and Roy appear in the 1940s as they originally did, including Roy's future drug addition as a result of the time travel shenanigans. By having Ollie and Roy appear in the 1940s as a result of time displacement, this could potentially create significant gaps in their present timelines that would probably need to be accounted for by future Green Arrow writers.

There's also the question of Power Girl, who -- as of this writing -- is probably still the Earth-2 survivor of Crisis on Infinite Earths. So it's going to be a Herculean task to figure out how to merge her pre-Crisis Earth-2 history with her Prime Earth history, especially on an Earth that already has Supergirl.

On the whole, Stargirl: Spring Break Special offers a mostly clean start to a Justice Society relaunch in the Infinite Frontier era. Courtney herself is off to a strong start as we can probably expect her new ongoing to launch sometime around the airing of the second season of her TV show. My only concern about the Justice Society's future is how much more Golden Age history will be retooled to accommodate Prime Earth canon, but that's about it.

★★★★☆

Become a Patron!
Diane Darcyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10088910242990719027noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-368648927403203265.post-88081404597044181822021-05-22T07:00:00.001-07:002021-05-22T08:27:15.913-07:00Huntress Podcast E52: Justice League of America #172 [Audio]
The Huntress Podcast would like to welcome you to the conclusion of this two-part story, where the Justice League and Justice Society of America squads are teamed up to solve this cosmic Agatha Christie Whodunnit type story. Two of those questions I have concern the Earth-2 Huntress and Power Girl: 'where are they now?' and 'what are their futures?'

At best, with Power Girl, we can probably expect her to still be the Earth-2 survivor of Crisis on Infinite Earths while the rest of Justice Society were all integrated into the main DC Earth. The events of Infinite Crisis that saw the brief return of the Earth-2 Superman and Lois Lane are most likely still a part of Power Girl's canon in the Infinite Frontier era. But what about her long lost best friend, the original Huntress from Earth-2?

One thing we know about the Infinite Frontier era so far is that DC is bringing all of their characters back to their more iconic status quo while integrating some of their more progressive developments from the post-Flashpoint era. We especially observed this with the original Golden Age version of Alan Scott who explicitly came out as gay to his children Jade and Obsidian (who is also gay) in Infinite Frontier #0. Alan Scott was originally rebooted as a gay man in the New 52 relaunch of Earth-2 in 2012.

Infinite Frontier #0 also saw the return of the original pre-Crisis Infinity Inc team, complete with Lyta Trevor as a member. Whether or not she's back to being the daughter of the Golden Age Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor has not yet been revealed, but there is a very strong chance that she is. This especially likely when you consider Wonder Woman will now be active in the Justice Society during World War II in the new timeline. It's also worth mentioning that the original Seven Soldiers of Victory re-acknowledged the Golden Age versions of Green Arrow and Speedy as past members.

Knowing what we know so far, what can we speculate about Helena Wayne's place in the DC Omniverse for the Infinite Frontier era? What is her iconic status quo and what developments from the New 52 can we possibly see integrated into her character moving forward?

When Helena Wayne was originally created by Paul Levitz, Joe Staton, and Bob Layton in 1977, they always intended for the character to stand out as a heroine of her own standing, complete with her own identity, but still part of a rich legacy. She was thus created as the daughter of the Golden Age versions of Batman and Catwoman who resided on Earth-2 and grew up to become the heroine known as the Huntress. In addition to succeeding her father as Gotham's guardian, the Huntress also joined the Justice Society of America where she met and befriended Power Girl, who is the Earth-2 version of Superman's famous cousin, Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.

Helena Wayne lasted as the Huntress from 1977 to 1986, the year DC rebooted their entire multiverse into a single Earth with the event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Helena Wayne initially survived long enough to see the new post-Crisis Earth, but was no longer acknowledged by the new Earth's history and was promptly killed in the final battle against the Anti-Monitor. Three years after that, the Huntress made a comeback, not as Helena Wayne, but as Helena Bertinelli in 1989.

Two decades after Helena Wayne's death, the events of Infinite Crisis from 2006 re-canonised her as a separate character from the post-Crisis Helena Bertinelli Huntress. Helena Wayne was once again acknowledged as the daughter of the Golden Age Batman and Catwoman from Earth-2, and was once again recognised as the original Huntress who was also a member of the Justice Society. Her friendship with Power Girl became central to the latter's narrative just before Flashpoint rebooted the DC Multiverse again, this time leading into the New 52 era in 2011.

During the New 52, the post-Crisis Helena Bertinelli Huntress was retconned as having been the original Helena Wayne Huntress from Earth-2 the whole time, but her history was now different from before. In the New 52's reboot of Earth-2, Helena Wayne started out has her parents' Robin before the latter died in a war with Darkseid. The events of that war also resulted in Helena Wayne getting stranded on the main DC Earth, along with Power Girl who was going by Supergirl at the time. It was on this Earth that Kara and Helena ended up taking up their more iconic identities of Power Girl and the Huntress with the latter also taking up 'Bertinelli' as her last name.

After being stranded on the main DC Earth for five years, the Earth-2 Huntress and Power Girl eventually made it back to their original Earth in 2014. During that time, a new version of Helena Bertinelli appeared as an agent of Spiral, and took up the Huntress identity two years later in 2016. By then, the previous Helena Wayne Huntress was no longer known to still be active by the main Earth's residents.

By 2017, the Justice League became aware of the Dark Multiverse in Dark Nights Metal, which had its own version of Earth-2 if it had survived Crisis on Infinite Earths and became the base template for the post-Crisis continuity. On this version of the post-Crisis Earth that resided in the Dark Multiverse, Helena Wayne survived and lived on to eventually use the New 52 version of her Huntress costume. Interaction between the Dark Multiverse and the normal DC Multiverse led to the events of Dark Nights Death Metal that destroyed the New 52 multiverse and rebooted it as an infinite omniverse.

Now that all of the DC timelines have been seemingly merged into a more streamlined continuity known as the Linearverse, how can we expect Helena Wayne to make a comeback in the Infinite Frontier era?

From Helena Wayne's entire four decade history, we know this much about her mainstream canon:

Earth-2 Daughter of Golden Age Batman and Catwoman

Original Huntress

Member of the Justice Society of America

World's Finest with Power Girl

Casualty of Crisis on Infinite Earths

From what Generations: Forged established of the Linearverse, Batman has been around since 1939 and has undergone several changes throughout the decades. It is possible that his original Golden Age marriage to Catwoman still happened in 1955 with Helena Wayne still being born in 1957. It's still possible that he died in 1979 with Catwoman dying in 1976 before that.

It's still possible that Crisis on Infinite Earths still happened as it originally did, but instead of Helena perishing like before, she might now be time displaced, which could setup a future Justice Society storyline, or at the very least a Power Girl storyline. As for Bruce and Selina themselves, their Golden Age, Silver Age, post-Crisis, and post-Flashpoint histories might now be merged, but with perhaps one detail of their history omitted. They might both remember having been married in the past, but no longer are because of changes to their timeline.

So what could be the fate of Helena Wayne if either Power Girl or the Justice Society find her? Well, since DC wants all of the classic versions of their characters to exist on the main DC Earth, it's far more likely she'll become a resident of the main DC Earth. She will just have to adapt to living on a world where she is now the same age as her parents and is no longer acknowledged as their daughter. Like Power Girl, she will have to rebuild her life from the ground up. This is where her New 52 history could be merged with her pre-Crisis history.

Like in the New 52 Worlds' Finest series, Helena Wayne and Kara Zor-L could continue operating globally as Huntress and Power Girl instead of a fixed location like when they resided on the pre-Crisis Earth-2. Helena Wayne could even end up exchanging her pre-Crisis costume for the New 52 version of her Huntress costume to symbolise her new status quo. The New 52 Huntress costume will not only avoid drawing the attention of both Batman and Catwoman on the main DC Earth (at least for a while), but Helena Wayne will also still be able to retain her original Huntress identity, complete a similar design.

When it comes to deciding on a permanent residence, it's very likely (if not an absolute certainty) that Helena Wayne would choose to reside in New York. Not just because that's where she and Power Girl were residing during the New 52, but also because thats where Power Girl's company, StarrWare, is based. It's also the location of the Justice Society's headquarters, which is where she is likely to meet for a JSA meeting. Since Power Girl already has an established life as StarrWare's CEO, Karen Starr, Helena Wayne could just as easily resume her life as a lawyer (her original profession pre-Crisis) in New York under her own name.

So now we get to the elephant in the room: wouldn't the main Earth versions of Batman and Catwoman eventually become aware of her presence if she's operating globally? Absolutely, and it could even be a future storyline. How do Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle reconcile with their long lost daughter from a marriage that happened in another lifetime? How will Helena Wayne feel to reconcile with the parents who are no longer her parents? What kind of relationship would they have?

Realistically speaking, I can only see Bruce staying in touch with Helena and occasionally working with her on some cases just like he did with her pre-Crisis when a version of him resided on Earth-1. Selina on the other hand may be more reluctant to accept the knowledge of a lost daughter that originally resided on a parallel world, and may not want to stay in touch with Helena. Not because she is incapable of loving Helena, but because it will be a painful reminder of a reality that no longer exists. Since Selina's life is now different from before, the presence of an adult daughter with the man she loves would be too much for her to process. At best, Selina might warm up to Helena eventually, but it won't be a 'right away' thing.

But wait! What about Tom King's Batman/Catwoman series? Isn't the Helena Wayne that's appearing in that story supposed to be the main Earth version? In short: no.

Back in June of 2020, Batman group editor Ben Abernathy explicitly confirmed that Tom King is no longer the architect of the Batman line moving forward. His Batman/Catwoman story is now existing as its own separate thing to conclude his Batman run, and that the main Batman line is now in the hands of James Tynion IV.

In addition to Tynion, current Detective Comics writer, Mariko Tamaki, is also serving as an architect as her ideas are also shaping Batman's future storyline. Catwoman writer, Ram V, similarly has very different plans for Selina Kyle. DC's most recent event, Future State, further confirmed the new status quo for Batman and Catwoman in the main DC canon, and the future depicted in Future State does not acknowledge the one depicted in Tom King's Batman/Catwoman.

At best, the future depicted in Tom King's Batman/Catwoman most likely exists as a possible future in Hypertime, or it could even exist as its own alternate universe similar to Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Sean Murphy's White Knight. At best, the high sales of Batman/Catwoman could result in future instalments set in that particular universe in a similar fashion to Dark Knight Returns and White Knight. But the story itself is not likely be the characters' mainstream DC canon. The way the characters are depicted in Tom King's future is too far afield for the mainstream versions of the characters, especially Helena Wayne.

If any ideas from King's Batman/Catwoman makes it into the mainstream DC canon, it will most likely be the introduction of the Phantasm due to the character's high popularity. The original Helena Wayne Huntress could also end up coming out as queer, especially considering how very close she was to Power Girl during the New 52. Whether she gets established as bisexual to not invalidate her past romantic relationships with men, or goes a similar route as Alan Scott will be the purview of her future writers. Personally, it would make more sense for Helena to be bisexual as her behaviour in the post-Flashpoint continuity was more noticeably bisexual.

What do you guys think will be Helena Wayne's future knowing what we know about both the Linearverse and the DC Omniverse? During their two month event, Future State, DC also released the Generations: Shattered and Generations: Forged one-shots, which introduced readers to the Linearverse.

Just what exactly is the Linearverse, and how does this tie into the current Omniverse Dark Nights Death Metal established? Is the Metaverse from Doomsday Clock still relevant? How does it all come together in a cohesive DC timeline that actually makes sense? More importantly, how do characters like Power Girl and the original Helena Wayne Huntress tie into the main DC canon moving forward, especially as characters tied to DC's Earth-2 universe?

Before we answer that last question (which I'll save for Part 02 of this post) let's try and make sense of the current timeline, beginning with the story that planted the first seed to the new status quo: Doomsday Clock.

In Doomsday Clock, Watchmen’s Doctor Manhattan hypothesised that the main DC timeline is a Metaverse: a world that serves as the base template from which the DC Multiverse is born. Any changes to the main DC timeline results in the creation of a new Earth. Per Doctor Manhattan’s rationalisation, this means the DC Universe as we know it started with Superman’s arrival in 1938, leading to the Golden Age of superheroes. Most of these heroes eventually came together and formed the first superhero team in existence: the Justice Society of America. Earth-1 was established as the world containing the (then new) Silver Age continuity with Earth-2 containing the previous Golden Age continuity. The first crossover between Earth-1 and Earth-2 in The Flash #123 story 'The Flash of Two Worlds' facilitated the later existence of Earth-3 (the world of the Crime Syndicate), which caused the DC Multiverse to grow.

The establishment of the DC Multiverse led to the creations of additional Earths such as Earth-4 (Charlton Comics), Earth-S (Fawcett Comics), and Earth-X (Quality Comics) when DC acquired the IPs of defunct comic book publishers. The growth of DC's infinite multiverse eventually led to the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths that merged the infinite multiverse into a single, but unstable new Earth. This then led to the events of Zero Hour and the creation of Hypertime in an attempt to contain the deviant details of DC's lengthy history that didn’t fit into the main DC canon.

The new Earth, however, was still unstable which led to the events of Infinite Crisis and 52 that resulted in the creation of a new multiverse containing only 52 Earths with the new Earth serving as the base template. The new Earth thus became known as Earth-0 in this new multiverse. Not long after this, however, Barry Allen made a significant change to the Earth-0 timeline in Flashpoint that rippled across the entire 52 multiverse resulting in the New 52. Watchmen’s Doctor Manhattan then made the New 52 multiverse his personal playground, resulting in the changes we saw to the DC characters. This was the beginning of would later become the DC Omniverse.

In both Dark Nights Metal and Justice League as written by Scott Snyder, the DC Multiverse got an explicit origin story. Snyder did this by establishing the existence of the Dark Multiverse underneath the normal DC Multiverse, as well as the existence of the Source Wall and World Forger. The concept is simple: Earths created by the World Forger that are stable make it into the normal DC Multiverse. Earths that prove unstable are doomed to perish into the Dark Multiverse.

Scott Snyder’s Justice League further elaborated on this concept by establishing Perpetua as the creator of the DC Multiverse dating all the way back to the original pre-Crisis multiverse. Her sons are the aforementioned World Forger, the Monitor, and Anti-Monitor, all of whom were tasked with looking after the multiverse. The World Forger populated the multiverse with new Earths, the Monitor oversaw the multiverse, and the Anti-Monitor protected it from outside threats. A disagreement between the three brothers resulted in the events that became known as Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The heroes and villains discovering the origin of the DC multiverse started the chain of events that led to Dark Nights Death Metal. This resulted in the destruction of the New 52 multiverse by an ultra powerful Batman Who Laughs (an evil entity from the Dark Multiverse), and it took Wonder Woman’s defeat of him to trigger its rebirth as an omniverse. The catch, however, is that the ‘main Earth’ is no longer at the epicentre.

The epicentre of the new DC Omniverse is occupied by two worlds that now serve as its sources of energy: the Elseworld that is implied to be the base template for the DC Multiverse, and Earth-Omega, which serves as the prison for Omniverse's most dangerous entity: Darkseid. This seemingly merges the idea of the Metaverse as originally posited in Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns with Scott Snyder’s own origin for the DC Multiverse.

With the DC Omniverse in place, the Generations: Shattered and Forged one-shots further elaborated on this concept by establishing the existence of the Linearverse, which is implied to be DC continuity itself. The Linearverse contains all of DC’s 83-year history and all the different evolutions and incarnations of DC characters throughout the decades. The Linearverse is most likely the foundation of Hypertime and the source of both DC’s current and divergent timelines. The current main DC Earth is said to be a product of the Linearverse.

So now that we (more or less) have an idea of what the DC Omniverse is about, the bigger question now is where the heck does Helena Wayne fit into this wibbly-wobbly-timey-whimey mess? Is she now Batman and Catwoman's lost daughter from Earth-2? Is her death in Crisis on Infinite Earths now undone and she's stranded on the main DC Earth? Is she back on Earth-2 in a new, revitalised form? Is she now lost to Hypertime?

Stay tuned for Part 02.

Become a Patron!
Diane Darcyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10088910242990719027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-368648927403203265.post-32380731826848388972021-03-02T18:00:00.006-08:002021-04-12T12:09:19.332-07:00Huntress Podcast E48: Adventure Comics #465 [Audio]
Laurel, Diane, and Ashford come together to talk about Helena Wayne, her leadership in the Justice Society of America, and street level stories.

Originally published 02 March 2021

For more episodes of The Huntress Podcast, visit:
https://www.thehuntresspodcast.com/

For more reviews and analysis on Helena Wayne Huntress, visit:
https://www.helenawaynehuntress.com/

Adventure Comics #465 is available on DC Universe Infinite

Become a Patron!
Diane Darcyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10088910242990719027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-368648927403203265.post-51016621900438946832021-02-14T09:30:00.001-08:002021-02-14T10:21:07.547-08:00Earth-2 Huntress Makes A Surprise Cameo in DC Love Is A Battlefield One-Shot

It's Valentine's Day today! My favourite day of the year for talking about Helena Wayne's love life, and making Valentine's Day graphics with Huntress and Power Girl. (In fact, you can check out the ones I've already made this year on my Instagram.)

Normally, on this day, I would be writing essays, opinion pieces, or even a fun 'Top #s' list on Helena Wayne's significant relationships. But for once, DC actually delivered the goods themselves!

'Huh? What's that you say? You mean DC finally hooked up the Earth-2 Huntress with Power Girl or Nightwing or someone since her doomed relationship with Harry Sims in the 1980s?'

Well, no, not exactly. That would be too good of a day for me if DC finally published a heathy romance story with Helena Wayne in any capacity. However, she did appear in last week's DC Love Is A Battlefield special, and you won't believe which story she actually appeared in! I'll give you a hint: It is NOT the Batman and Catwoman story by Christos Gage and Xermanico as one might expect!

Instead, our beloved Earth-2 Huntress appeared in another story involving another fan-favourite dynamic duo: the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy romance story by Tim Seeley and Rebekah Isaacs!

In the story, an elderly Harley and Ivy reminisce about the old days of them causing mayhem and mischief in Gotham. In one of those past adventures, Harley and Ivy encountered the Earth-2 Helena Wayne Huntress, who happened to be paying a visit to her Earth-0 family. Noticeably, the Earth-0 Batfamily had also acquired a new female Robin by this point in their timeline who looks very similar to her New 52 self.

Of course, comic book Twitter and even CBR exploded with speculation as to the identity of that new female Robin. While many were hoping that Robin would be Helena Wayne's main Earth counterpart, the writer himself, Tim Seeley, confirmed on his Twitter that this was not the case. He did explicitly confirm that the Huntress appearing in the story is the Earth-2 Helena Wayne, but that the female Robin is someone else entirely:

My thought was that this is like 5-10 years into the future, that's a totally new kid as Robin, and that's the original Earth-2 Helena Wayne Huntress. Just fer fun.
— Tim Seeley (@HackinTimSeeley) February 9, 2021

So if that future Robin isn't Helena Wayne's main Earth counterpart, then who could that new female Robin be? Athanasia—who is Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul's daughter in the Injustice universe—perhaps? Given that DC seems to be shifting focus to the Batman/Talia relationship for Infinite Frontier this decade, it's not an unlikely possibility!

The part that has me feeling giddy, however, is the cameo by the Earth-2 Helena Wayne Huntress herself. Can we expect to see more future appearances by our favourite Earth-2 heroine once the Justice Society makes a proper comeback? I certainly hope so! Return of the classic Helena Wayne Huntress is long overdue at this point, along with her getting more stories with Power Girl and the Justice Society!

What does everyone else think? Think we'll finally get to see our favourite Huntress back in action during the Infinite Frontier era? Literally! On the first week of January, Dark Nights: Death Metal delivered its epic finale that not only launched DC's two-month event Future State on the same day, but more importantly, started the new era of DC: Infinite Frontier.

What exactly is Infinite Frontier? It's hard to say at this point in time with so many details still being revealed as 2021 continues to roll out. What we do know as of Death Metal's conclusion is that DC is back to—spoiler alert—having an infinite multiverse again. Huh? What does this even mean? Does this mean the pre-Crisis DC Multiverse is back or something different? Well, the answer to that is 'both.'

Like the conclusion of 2019's Doomsday Clock, Death Metal once again posits that every DC story that ever was, currently is, and ever will be is now part of the mainstream DC canon. So that pre-Crisis DC Multiverse where the Justice Society exists on Earth-2 and the Justice League on Earth-1? Canon. That New Earth that formed as a result of the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths? Canon. That original 52 Multiverse that came out of the events of Infinite Crisis? Canon. That New 52 multiverse that came out of the events of Flashpoint a decade ago? Canon. Even all the Elseworlds stories DC published since 1986 like Kingdom Come, Gotham by Gaslight, Superman: Red Son, and more recent ones like Injustice, Batman: Last Knight on Earth, and Batman: White Knight are all part of the Infinite Frontier canon.

So, now, where do we go from here? Well, see...that, right there, is the money question: what is DC going to do with their infinite multiverse?

As of March, we do know that the majority of DC's monthly titles will be set on Earth-0, with The Crime Syndicate being the only book set on Earth-3. As of Death Metal #7, we know—spoiler alert—that the classic Justice Society is back on Earth-0, but Earth-0 is no longer the centre of the infinite multiverse. It's now just another Earth in an infinite sea of Earths with another Elseworld (maybe the base template world?) now occupying that space. Where will the Future State stories fit into that timeline, only time will tell.

So where does this leave the classic Earth-2 and two of its well known residents: the original Helena Wayne Huntress and Power Girl? Well, with the Justice Society now being published as part Earth-0's canon again, who the heck knows. Since they are the characters who are frequent casualties of DC's cosmic reboots because of their blood relations to Batman and Superman respectively, their future is always up in the air. At best, they will either resurface on another incarnation of Earth-2, or they will somehow be added to Earth-0 in some capacity. (Just as long as Helena Wayne continues using her original Huntress identity, but I'll save that discussion for a new post I'll be writing soon.)

What do you think, DC fans? Where do you think DC will go with Infinite Frontier? More comics set on DC's multiple Earths with some familiar faces returning? Maybe some of those multiple Earths will get DC Digital First comics? Maybe even graphic novels? The opening sequence of Wonder Woman 1984 does exactly that when it states its new thesis for the film: you have to work for the things you want in life and can’t take any shortcuts to get there!

Click to read on Patreon for $1.00 per month
Diane Darcyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10088910242990719027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-368648927403203265.post-89331316469018603852020-12-25T14:00:00.002-08:002020-12-25T14:00:34.268-08:00Countdown to 2021: Huntress Q&A 25 December 2020
Ashford and Diane discuss @MWDanvers questions:

1.
