No longer acknowledged by history, the Justice League of America put up a fight against the infant Earth's newest threat, Surtur, but they are no match for the fiery giant who quickly disposes them. Now standing up in defence of their new Earth, the Justice Society of America joins forces with Infinity Inc, the Seven Soldiers of Victory, and the Freedom Fighters as the new All-Star Squadron to take down the fiery giant once and for all. But do they have the strength and power to do so without any casualties of their own? Welcome to the Dark Multiverse, where familiar events from the multiverse above top take a sharp turn for the worst in the multiverse below!

The Best of Huntress and Power Girl: Infinity Inc #2 Review

Title: Infinity Inc #2
Story: Generations, Part 2: A Gauntlet Hurled
Characters: Power Girl (Kara Zor-L), Huntress (Helena Wayne), Fury (Hippolyta Trevor), Jade (Jennifer-Lynn Hayden), Obsidian (Todd Rice), Silver Scarab (Hector Hall), Star-Spangled Kid (Sylvester Pemberton), Northwind (Norda Cantrell)
Creators: Roy Thomas (writer), Jerry Ordway (artist)
Publication Date: April 1984
Available In: Print | Digital

Summary: Picking up where the last issue left off, Hector Hall, Lyta Trevor, Norda Cantrell, and Albert Rothstein depart with bitter feelings of rejection from the Justice Society. They especially resent being told they lacked the level of experience the team needs to handle the kinds of threats they regularly deal with, noting that they can only obtain it by actually working alongside them. The group is joined by Jennie-Lynn Hayden and her brother Todd Rice who arrived at the JSA's doorstep to find out if Alan Scott (the Green Lantern) was really their father.

Convergence: Infinity Inc #2 Review

Title: Convergence: Infinity Inc #2
Story: The Family Business
Characters: Fury (Hippolyta Trevor), Jade (Jennifer-Lynn Hayden), Obsidian (Todd Rice), Silver Scarab (Hector Hall), Star-Spangled Kid (Sylvester Pemberton), Northwind (Norda Cantrell)
Creators: Jerry Ordway (writer), June Brigman (artist)
Publication Date: May 2015
Available In: Print Digital

Summary: Since the majority of this issue is the battle between Infinity Inc and the Dogs of War, this is going to be a very short summary since there's not a whole lot to describe about the battle itself, and there aren't as many individual character story arcs here like there were in issue #1. On the bright side, however, there is still a longer detailed review ahead!

Picking up where issue #1 left off, the Dogs of War struck first and Infinity Inc's team leader, Sylvester Pemberton, was immediately incapacitated. Seeing this as their cue to attack, Lyta Trevor briefly assumes the leadership hat and commands the rest of the Infinitors to attack, prompting them all but Brainwave Jr (who is catatonic) to charge for battle.

Convergence Is Here! How And Where To Pre-Order Convergence Titles

Starting next week on April Fools Day (no joke), we'll get to revisit our old friends from the DC Universe of continuities past, starting with the pre-Flashpoint right down to the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths timelines. While it's highly unlikely our favourite versions of our favourite characters will survive the event, the fact is we'll get to see them one more time until the next major DC event brings them back from the dead.

Since DC Entertainment--like any organisation--only understands the language of money, here's our chance to get our voices heard with our wallets! Below is a list of where you can pre-order the Earth-2 Convergence comics digitally, as well as how to acquire them in print.

Where do worlds go when they die?
The Earthquakes felt round the Multiverse, Superman’s lost days after “Doomed,” the World’s End – all these points will converge as the history of the DCU is spun from a new perspective, the perspective of a mad god and his arrogant child. The biggest story in DC history ties into literally every DC story ever told – and it all begins here.
Kingdom Come, Red Son, Wild West Justice League, Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew – all the worlds you remember can still be found on Telos. Everything matters. Every story matters.
Don’t miss the start of DC’s April/May 2015 event with this special issue!

PRINT VERSION

Sadly, unlike digital downloads which are easily available, print versions are a bit harder to come by due to the monopoly that Diamond has on the print comic market. As such, buyers--for the most part--have to pre-order them via comic book shops. Fortunately, the process is very simple since all it requires is entering a comic book store near you and telling the retailer (or whoever is at the register) which books you would like to pre-order. You then give them your name and they will reserve copies of the books you want for you. When you go to pick the books up, you just tell the retailer your name, and they will pull your comics from your file and hand them to you. That's it!

While you can also just walk into a store and pick up the books you want off the shelf, pre-ordering comics is more convenient for three reasons: first, it guarantees that you will still get a copy of the book you want in the event that the title actually sells out at the store. This does happen a lot with newer titles and especially event comics.

The second reason pre-ordering is more convenient is that it lets the retailer know how many copies of a title to buy, especially for shelf. The worst thing that can happen for a retailer is for them to buy more comics than they actually sell, effectively causing them to lose money. Pre-ordering a title gives the retailer an idea of which books are going to be in high demand, which will influence how many copies of that title to buy.

The third reason pre-ordering is more convenient is that it lets the larger comic industry know which books are in high demand, which will influence business decisions. So if you have a favourite character you want to keep reading about? Support them by buying the books they appear in. This will let the publisher--in this case DC Comics--know which characters (and comics) are highly sellable, and which ones to feature in more books. Or if they are already appearing in a book, this will let them know which ones to give solo titles to!

The bottom line here is this: if there is a comic or character you want to support, pre-order now! Dan DiDio already stated that DC will look at the Convergence sales in order to get an idea of which ones to give future titles to!

If you don't have access to a comic book store, not a problem. Fortunately print versions can still be acquired outside of a comic book store if you know where to look, especially online. For example, some comic retailers do have online stores via eBay or Amazon that will allow you to pre-order the comics you want, which is convenient. They still have to order through Diamond, so you're not actually buying Jane or Joe's copy of a comic they don't want anymore. Some stores even offer discounts, though you may still have to pay the shipping costs. Variant covers are also more easy to find online, but do be aware that they tend to cost more than the regular covers since they're often rare and sold as collectibles.

All that being said, what is motivating me to pimp the hell out of this event? I want an Earth-2 that actually feels like Earth-2 in concept, and not like DC's version of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, which is what I feel we got with the current Earth-2. The current Earth-2 and characters are very much blank slates starting in June, which means writer Daniel Wilson will develop these characters as he (or his editor) sees fit. He may have some good ideas for these characters, and he may not. I can safely say from having read the last five issues of Earth-2: World's End in their entirety that he's not very good at plotting complex narratives for a comic, and he especially doesn't write women well, often reducing their roles in the story to focus on the men instead. That for me is a major problem that will influence my future investment on Earth-2 despite being a huge fan of these characters and franchise.

It is possible that working on a monthly may allow Wilson to script his story better, but between his Earth-2: Futures End one-shot and Earth-2: World's End weekly series, I'm not feeling too confident or optimistic on that front. I feel even less confident that Wilson will be able to characterise these characters well (especially the women) with Mike Cotton as his editor, as this man clearly has no understanding of issues with diverse representation in comics. Problems with sexist storytelling were especially prevalent under Cotton's leadership, and something I found very off-putting across all three Earth-2 books that we got, including the one that was fronted by two women! All that into account, Earth-2: Society is very much a trade wait for me. If I hear positive things about it, I may check it out in trade. But if it turns out as bad as Wilson's Earth-2: World's End series, I'll leave it sitting on the shelf at the store. It really does need to 'wow' me for me to give it a chance.

Given what my options are right now, supporting the Pre-Crisis Earth-2 Convergence books (and any pre-Crisis Earth-2 Justice Society trades) are my best options for letting DC know what I actually want to read. In my honest opinion, the Justice Society characters are at their strongest when they are actually accompanied by the history and legacy that genuinely made them stand out from the Earth-0 Justice League. The Justice Society appearing decades earlier than the Justice League was one way that they were different. The fact that there were different generations of superheroes as members of the Justice Society gave it age diversity--something that is sorely lacking with the Justice League.

The fact that three women succeeded Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as the second generation Trinity without actually using their predecessors' symbols was equally significant considering how very male and Trinity-centric the majority of DC franchises tend to be. This is especially true with the Batman franchise in particular. The fact that the majority of older Justice Society members were married and had children of their own that led to the formation of Infinity Inc was also special and not an idea that was prevalent on the primary DC universe. Considering how very rare these ideas are in superhero comics, you can pretty much guarantee I pre-ordered the Pre-Crisis Earth-2 Convergence books (and the America vs the Justice Society trade) both in digital and print! I'm very much looking at a very tight wallet in both April and May!

DC Comics ‘Love Letter’ to old DC fans translated:

"We brought your favourite characters back so that we could brutally kill them again, this time for good."

Why, thank you DC Comics for this very thoughtful gift of a (once again) dead (possibly fridged) pre-Crisis Helena Wayne. It was truly all I could ask for after you've traded your current version of her for her grandad, and even fridged her in World's End to really solidify her new place on your new 'Earth-2.' You even went out of your way to give your current Helena Wayne a nicely polished coffin in the form of Daniel H. Wilson to finish burying her. I am truly feeling the love this Valentine's Day!

That being said, DC Comics, I regret to inform you I am finalising our divorce this May. I wish I could get custody of Huntress and Power Girl so that they can end up in a much better place than in this dark and dingy hellhole you call 'a home.' But sadly, our broken system has allowed you to keep them, where they are bound to endure more abuse for more years to come. I am truly sad about that.

If the DC Universe was itself the Mjölnir, it would have deemed you unworthy aeons ago. On that note, enjoy being second fiddle to Marvel for the rest of your publishing life. At this point--after you've botched your rebooted universe twice (third time's a charm)--I'm pretty confident now you've reached the point of no return. You've officially arrived at the event horizon of your future financial success, and there's no turning back from that now.

From this point forward, I will have to honour the spirit of Huntress and Power Girl in some other way that doesn't call for my supporting your abusive behaviour. But on the bright side, at least this will force me to exercise my more creative brain. I do have stories of my own to tell.

さよなら!

As I mentioned last week on the original post, these are not most inspired variant covers ever designed, not even by graphic design standards. Ironically it did inspire me to create a Chip Kidd variant cover of my own, especially since there are not enough women fronting any of the Earth-2 ones other than Jenny-Lynn Hayden (Jade) for Infinity Inc. It took all but five minutes to put together in photoshop, having spent more time looking for the right font and editing the DC logo than making the cover itself.

I realise I may be biased, but I honestly like my variant cover for Detective Comics better:

I'll be honest about the variant covers and say they look very uninspired, especially since I could have made these same covers in Photoshop in less than half an hour. All I'd need to do is to blow up a panel, apply a gradient, add some text, slap on the DC logo, and BAM! I'd have the variant covers. I can even make them all using the same PDF file. I'll post the variants on a separate post and you'll see what I mean.

That nitpick aside, I'm very much looking forward to these pre-Crisis Earth-2 titles. The New 52 Earth-2 characters that didn't survive Earth-2: World's End (Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Val-Zod, Dick Grayson, and Thomas Wayne) will be on the main Convergence miniseries, but honestly I could care less for this one. I'd be more interested if it wasn't so Thomas Wayne-centric, but alas. Since Thomas Wayne is not a character I care about, and very much the only character DC cares about above the other Earth-2 characters, I have a profound lack of investment. Hopefully, this will be the last we see of him. If DC insists on keeping him around despite having far more interesting Earth-2 characters than him, they are beyond help.

Honestly, DC. I don't know who you're trying to sell this character to, but I can safely tell you he is not the character the majority of Earth-2 fans are interested in reading about. We want Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Kendra Munoz-Saunders, Kara Zor-L, Helena Wayne, etc. We've been saying this for the past year or so. If you want to cater to the Flashpoint Thomas Wayne fans, develop him within the context of that universe where the idea of him as Batman actually worked. Let the legitimate Earth-2 characters have their own universe to themselves. Let Helena Wayne be the hero of her own narrative.

That said, if you want to get to know the Classic Earth-2, want the real Justice Society back, or just want to support Earth-2 period, buy these titles if you can! I know $3.99 is pushing it, but at least we're briefly getting the real Earth-2 back! (This is probably the most I'll spend on DC this year).

Newsarama released the solicits for Week 4 of Convergence today, and I have to say April and May of 2015 is looking like a promising two months for Classic DC Comics fans like myself. Not only is it refreshing to see some familiar faces again, but it'll be a nice breather from the constant Doom and Gloom of the New 52.

I sincerely hope that Convergence is successful enough to lead to some much needed positive changes to the overall narrative of all of these characters, and especially bring back the much needed diverse storytelling that's so sorely lacking in the New 52. This especially rings true for the New 52 Earth-2 characters who have yet to have stories told about them, and not have their entire narratives centred on editorial mandates, Apokolips, or Helena Wayne's usurper grandfather, who by the way, is supposed to be dead, even on Earth-2.

More importantly I really want for Convergence to be a really strong message to DC Comics, letting them know that we want recognisable versions of our favourite characters again! I know I'll definitely be subscribing to the Earth-2 titles when I go to the shop tomorrow, and hopefully everyone else who is a fan of the Classic Earth-2 does as well.

The only complaint I have right now about these solicits is DC's constant obsession with needing to have a Batman character in every narrative that they have. The decision to rob Helena Wayne of her own narrative on Earth-2 in favour of her (supposed to be dead) grandfather in the New 52 was one of the many things that got me to stop buying Earth-2 after the Tower of Fate story arc concluded. The decision to completely mischaracterise Helena Wayne on top of that to advance the narrative of her grandfather was another bad decision that guaranteed I wouldn't give World's End a chance.

Believe me when I say 'New Earth-2 Batman' is the last thing I want to see on the solicitation of a Helena Wayne story that she shares with her former Bat sibling, Dick Grayson. It's especially insulting that DC is going back to this idea of 'needing a new Batman' on the version of Earth-2 where both Helena Wayne and Dick Grayson explicitly decided against taking over her father's identity and mantle, reasoning that legends should in fact stay legends, and that--as Bruce Wayne's successors--they should create new legends of their own as Huntress and Robin respectively. This was literally the story of Adventure Comics #462, first published in 1978. I honestly find this idea far more appealing (and with stronger story potential) than needing another Batman character for editorial to obsesses over.

Honestly, DC, let these legacy characters be the stars of their own narratives. Let Helena Wayne take over her father's job as the Huntress. This idea was already successful in the 1970s and 1980s. She was, in fact, one of DC's more popular characters in the Bronze Age. I really don't see why this same concept can't still work or be successful in the year 2015, especially as the daughter of DC's second popular flagship couple, Batman and Catwoman. Additionally, I don't have any problems with Dick Grayson reclaiming his Robin identity on Earth-2 either. Sure, update the costume so that the colours aren't all over the place and that it looks more appropriate for an adult male, but let him keep something that always belonged to him. Earth-2 does not need a new Batman to replace Helena's father, Bruce Wayne. Let me me repeat that:

EARTH-2 DOES NOT NEED A NEW BATMAN TO REPLACE HELENA'S FATHER, BRUCE WAYNE.

Helena Wayne and Dick Grayson can take over her father's job just fine on their own.

The Best of Huntress and Power Girl: Justice Society of America #20 Review

Title: Justice Society of America #20
Story: Earth Bound
Characters: Power Girl, Huntress (Helena Wayne), Justice Society, Infinity Inc
Creators: Geoff Johns (writer), Jerry Ordway, Dale Eaglesham (artists)
Publication Date: November 2008
Available In: Print | Digital

Summary: Having learnt that the Earth-2 she landed on and its subsequent inhabitants aren't the same ones she knew prior to the first Crisis many years ago, Power Girl seeks the only man she can think of who can help her get back home: the Earth-2 version of Michael Holt! (JSA #18)

On Earth-2, Michael Holt never became Mister Terrific like his mainstream counterpart and instead makes his living working as a physics professor at a university. His wife, Paula, is also still alive in this universe and pregnant with their first child. Power Girl tells Earth-2 Michael her life's story, namely that she was originally from Earth-2, then Crisis happened, got stranded on the main DCU Earth, and just when she thought she was finally back where she belongs, she was slapped with the reality that this Earth-2 wasn't her home and that she had been replaced. She thinks Michael doesn't believe her, but Michael tells her about his own miracle in the form of still having Paula in his life against all odds. He particularly talked about the terrible car accident Paula was in years ago that left her in a coma for three months, and feeling disillusioned by neurologists' inability to help. At one point he contemplated suicide until he caught another man about to do the same thing, and stopped him from completing the act. He took that man to a church and that man had prayed for him that night. The following day, Paul had woken up, and since then, Michael believed in anything. He therefore decides to help Power Girl. The Best of Huntress and Power Girl: Justice Society of America Annual #1 Review

Title: Justice Society of America Annual #1
Story: Earth-2: Golden Age/The Hunted
Characters: Huntress (Helena Wayne), Power Girl
Creators: Geoff Johns (writer), Jerry Ordway (artist)
Publication Date: July 2008
Available In: Print | Digital

Summary: The first half of the JSA Annual opens up on the parallel world of Earth-2 with a distraught Helena Wayne ruminating over the tragedies she had endured as a consequence of being both the Huntress and her father's daughter. More specifically, she has noticed a consistent pattern in which the Joker and various other villains had been systematically attacking the people in her life in response to their own mortality and out of a strong desire to keep their legacy alive in some way. The more recent of these tragedies was the disfiguring of Helena's boyfriend (fellow DA Harry Sims) by the Joker in an attempt to create a new Two-Face. It is at this point that Helena makes the decision to kill the Earth-2 Joker once and for all before he continues to destroy more lives.
