The End Of A Decade: 2019 In Review

Here we are! Last day of the year, last day of a decade, last day of an era of DC as we prepare for the next DC reboot that's going to launch Earth-5G in 2020.

Top 10 Most Memorable Huntress Moments In 2010s

The holidays are coming to an end as is the year and decade. Looking back on this decade, we got Helena Wayne back for seven of those ten years, which is actually not bad. It was certainly better than going another full decade without her and maybe only getting her in one or two stories that matter. This decade, we got her in at least nine books in a non-cameo capacity, and was a protagonist in at least five of those books.

While I can't say I've had the best decade as a Helena Wayne Huntress fan in terms of getting quality stories (and for other reasons that will be discussed in the 'Year in Review' post), there were at least some things I enjoyed about the post-Flashpoint version of the character. From her unashamed love of sweets to fighting crime with style to her openly bisexual behaviour, here are Helena Wayne's Top 10 Best Moments of the 2010s!

Doomsday Clock #12 Reinstates A Classic Superhero Team And Teases The Return Of Another Fan Favourite Heroine

It's been a while since I've written about current events in the comics, and that was largely due to the fact I've been busy with other projects these past three months. Projects such as reviewing the 2002 Birds of Prey television series (which I concluded last month), and have finished recording episodes for the Straight out of Gallifrey Podcast, the Fire and Water Podcast, and we just wrapped up recording the first five episodes for Volume 02 of The Huntress Podcast that will launch first thing next year. (More news on this soon.)

But getting to the main topic at hand, today saw the finales of both Tom King's Batman run as well as Geoff Johns' and Gary Frank's Doomsday Clock, as well as the penultimate issue of Scott Snyder's Justice Doom War storyline in Justice League. Out of the three, I definitely want to talk about Doomsday Clock because the finale of this maxiseries lays the groundwork for the future of DC, and for once, I'm actually excited about DC's future plans!

While making her way back to the Clocktower, Oracle (Barbara Gordon) makes one last stand seconds before the antimatter wave wipes their Earth—and them—from existence.

First Look At Ashley Scott As The Huntress For Crisis On Infinite Earths

Since the official announcement Ashley Scott will be reprising her Birds of Prey role as the Huntress for the upcoming CW DCTV crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, it has been an exciting couple of weeks for me as a Helena Wayne Huntress fan. Not just because Ashley Scott was my first exposure to the Huntress at all, but because she's also been revealing in the past couple of weeks how much this role has meant to her.

This week, Scott began shooting her first scenes for The Flash S06E09 and revealed in an Instagram post the emotional experience she had slipping back into the Huntress costume for the first time in 16 years:

Following the clues of her investigation, Helena is led not to a petty vandal, but to one of the Green Lantern's deadliest villains!

The Crisis Of What Went Wrong In Infinite Reboots

October is here and so is the NYCC for the year. Over the past two days, DC teased a major announcement that would be released on Friday. Sometime yesterday afternoon, DC co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio revealed that they are working on an ultimate DC timeline that would provide the connective tissue for DC’s past, present, and future.

Top 5 Reasons All-Star Comics: Only Legends Live Forever Should Make Everyone's Trade Collection

It is the last day of September, which means we are literally two weeks away from the release of All-Star Comics: Only Legends Live Forever to comic book retailers, and three weeks away from the book being sold in the mainstream market.

Originally, the new Bronze Age JSA omnibus was supposed to be released in August of this year, but for some reason, the release date got pushed back to September, then later October. Fortunately, it appears the book will finally be hitting the stands sooner rather than later.

While the book is definitely a must for every fan of the Justice Society, it is also a must have for Huntress and Power Girl fans. Here are the Top 5 reasons All-Star Comics: Only Legends Live Forever should be a part of your collection.

Ashley Scott Set To Reprise Her Role As The Huntress For The CW's Crisis On Infinite Earths

For almost a year now, DCTV fans have known that a CW adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths was on the horizon as the big Arrowverse event for 2019. What no one anticipated was the network going all out with the event by inviting every actor who has ever portrayed a DC Comics character either on television or on film to participate in the crossover.

From Kevin Conroy who voiced Batman in various animation shows and video games, to Burt Ward who played Robin in the 1966 Batman show, to Smallville's Tom Welling and Erica Durance, and even Brandon Routh from the 2006 Superman Returns film reprising their roles, Crisis on Infinite Earths is increasingly becoming a love letter to DC in other media. Today, the 2002 Birds of Prey star Ashley Scott confirmed on Twitter that she will be reprising her role as The Huntress for the event:

Batman Day 2019: What If Helena Wayne Survived Crisis On Infinite Earths?

The idea for this post was actually presented to me by another fan on Twitter who requested that I write about how Helena Wayne's life would've panned out from her last pre-Crisis appearance (Crisis on Infinite Earths) to now. Specifically, what would her status quo be? What relationships would she still have? Would she still have the same career? Live in the same location? Wear the same costume? Have unique gadgets and vehicles to assist her in her Huntress missions? Would her role in the Justice Society be the same or change?

Top 3 Reasons Helena Wayne And Helena Bertinelli Should Be Separate Characters

Today is the canonical birthday of the pre-Crisis Helena Wayne Huntress as established in the back matter pages of Infinity Inc #7. 1984 was a great year to be a Huntress fan because in addition to helping kickstart Infinity Inc which further explored the legacy of the Justice Society, she was central to Earth-2's main event for that year: America vs the Justice Society of America. DC was also starting to recognise the popularity of the Huntress by this time that they began the initial work to launch the character onto her own ongoing series.

Then Crisis on Infinite Earths happened in 1985.

Justice League vs Doomsday Clock: The Journey Into DC's Past, Present, And Future Continues

Today is the release of both Doomsday Clock #11 and Justice League #31, both of which have a unifying theme concerning the DC Universe's susceptibility to change, but have yet to offer any insights into its future direction. At the moment, both stories are offering their own interpretations for why the DC Universe changes the way that it does.

Exactly who is June Moorman, and what history does she have with the Huntress that makes her want to murder her?

Older Comics Are Outselling New Comics. What Needs To Be Done Differently?

San Diego Comic Con was last weekend, and admittedly, there was nothing to write home about since DC didn't reveal any new details on their upcoming projects that we didn't know about already. However, there is one thing DC co-publisher Dan DiDio said at the con last Thursday that really got my attention:

'We do these Facsimile Editions where we reprint older issues of comics including all the old ads and stuff…and in some cases these are selling more than the new comics with these characters. People are more interested in buying the stories from 30 or 40 years ago than the contemporary stories, and that’s a failure on us. We should be focused on moving things forward, always pushing the boundaries and finding new stories to tell. That’s how we’ll survive and grow this industry.' (Source)

Earth-2 Heroes Join The Justice League In Upcoming Justice Doom War

Justice League #26 kickstarted the storyline that's going to lead into Scott Snyder's 'Justice Doom War' epic, and presumably the 'Year of the Villain' event.

Following the events of 'The Sixth Dimension', Superman has recruited the World Forger to the Justice League in order to help them save the DC Multiverse from dying as a consequence of the Source Wall breaking during the events of Dark Nights: Metal. However, when the heroes returned to their Earth, they soon discovered that their world has been in state of disarray during their absence.

The Justice Society Returns In Scott Snyder's Justice League This Autumn

Today has been an interesting, yet very weird day for me. For one, my day started out with a friend and I sharing our disillusionment with DC as of late, especially in face of some of the kerfuffles that have been taking place ever since WB and AT&T have been taking a more active role in managing DC's intellectual properties.

Then later in the day, I talked in-depth about Helena Wayne's core mythology as a character, why she fits in better with the Justice Society, and why she doesn't really fit into the narrative of the Prime Earth Bruce and Selina because of how profoundly different their journeys are.

Top 5 Times Helena Wayne Hinted She May Be Bisexual

June is Pride Month for the LGBTQA community, and for years I've been wanting to write about Helena Wayne's bisexual behaviour in the comics. Everything from pre-Crisis to post-Crisis to post-Flashpoint, there has been a treasure trove of evidence that seem to suggest Batman and Catwoman's canonical Earth-2 daughter may be attracted to more than one gender.

While Helena Wayne has historically only had one confirmed romantic partner—District Attorney Harry Sims—writers also couldn't resist teasing romantic attraction between herself and her father's ward, Dick Grayson, as well as writing her friendship with Power Girl in ways that play into romantic tropes. In the latter case, it's especially hard to overlook the queer subtext.

Despite neither DC Comics nor Huntress co-creator Paul Levitz ever explicitly confirming Helena Wayne's sexuality, there are plenty stories with the character for readers to examine and draw our own conclusions. Based on the way Helena Wayne has interacted with various characters as both the Huntress and as herself across three different continuities, I would argue that she is indeed bisexual.

From pre-Crisis to post-Crisis to post Flashpoint here are my Top 5 picks that—to some degree—support my conclusions.

Doomsday Clock vs Justice League: Two Competing Entities for the Evolution of the DC Multiverse

Doomsday Clock #10 came out this past week, and I have to say this is the first issue I've genuinely enjoyed since the series first launched in 2017. I won't get into Doctor Manhattan's role in this story too much in part because I feel Geoff Johns has been using the character in ways that don't fully understand the purpose of his character in Watchmen, and in part because I want to focus on the details that matter most to me in this story: the history of the DC Multiverse and specifically how that changed over a period of time.

Geoff Johns shifted focus back to the DC Universe in Doomsday Clock #8, but it is actually in Doomsday Clock #10 where we start seeing answers to some of the questions first posited in DC Universe Rebirth #1 in 2016, some of which seem to intersect with events happening in Scott Snyder's Justice League. There will be spoilers throughout this post for both Doomsday Clock and Justice League. If you aren't caught up on either series (or both) this is your stopping point to give you the chance to catch up. If you are all up-to-date, proceed to the next paragraph.

Hi! Hello. Happy belated New Year and happy belated Valentine's Day. "Where the heck have you been, D? Also, where the heck is Session 03?? It's beyond late!"

Heh. Sorry about that. I guess before we get to today's main story, let me briefly discuss what's been going on. First things first, I will confirm Mark and I did record Session 03 in December. Twice.
